The Hot Lunch Program at Gabriola Elementary was initiated by a donation from the Ken Stefanson Memorial Fund 2 years ago and has the support of the Teachers, Principal and PAC of Gabriola Elementary. The Hot Lunch Program is twice a month; every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month.

A “Farm to School” grant has given us the ability to extend our vision of the program to come full circle for the students. Students grow their own food in the school vegetable garden and the gardens located at the Commons and when harvested, becomes ingredients for the hot lunches. Students have started seeds, tended garden beds, planted, watered and harvested. During hot lunch preparation, grade 6 students came to the kitchen to help prepare the meal, and grade 7 students help with serving.

All these meals are home made from scratch and follow the school’s health guideline policies of healthy eating. When meal planning we look at what we have from the gardens and have been processing many vegetables as they ripen for future use in the program.

The Hot Lunch forms must be returned by Monday, September 14th to get an accurate count for meals.
